HP Pavilion DV6-2190US 15.6-Inch Laptop (Black) Review

I posted a long review of the current crop of DV6-21xx series of notebooks here: HP Pavilion DV6-2170US. The models are mostly the same with different CPUs (one has a discrete graphics chip). All include the newest mobile processors from Intel which eclipse the older Core2 line in terms of performance. Those with integrated graphics include Intel's new HD graphics which are also a big improvement over Intel's old 4500HD graphics (which are still inferior to discrete graphics chips from AMD/ATI and Nvidia when it come to 3D gaming). I would suggest avoiding the older DV6 13xx and 12xx series unless you can get a really good price (which may happen as HP discontinues them).

Here is the summary of models I posted in that review:

If you're staring at the various DV6 models trying to decide which one to buy my advice is (based on the models available when I wrote this):

- For home users who aren't gamers you can save about 0 if you go with the HP Pavilion DV6-2150US 15.6-Inch Laptop which combines a Core i3 with Win 7 Premium and a 6 cell battery. The performance for non-gaming software will be very close to the more expensive i5 models and you'll save money by going with Win 7 Premium and a smaller battery.

- If you need good battery life, run higher end software, or like to game a bit go for the HP Pavilion DV6-2170US which combines the Core i5 with the 12 cell battery. The Intel graphics aren't the best but it's a big improvement over past products. This is the model I think has the best balance of features.

- If gaming matters more than battery life you should probably look at other laptop lines but if you are sold on the DV6 go for the HP Pavilion DV6-2190US which has a quad CPU Core i7 and NVIDIA GeForce GT 230M graphics. It's only got a 6 cell battery and that CPU and graphics are going to drain it quickly. You'll pay about 0 over this model.

- If you have a lot of older software consider the HP Pavilion DV6-2157SB Small Business Edition which comes with Windows 7 Pro (which can run older software on a WinXP kernel). It has a Core i3 and a 6 cell battery. It also has a different finish ("Plaid Mocha") but I haven't seen it so I can't comment on it.

This case is exactly what it says it is, and is well made. I'm pretty confident that it will fit all 10 inch wide screen netbooks. It fits our Dell Inspiron Mini 10 with the 6 cell battery snuggly. There would be more wiggle room on a computer with a 3 cell or flush battery. There is a thoughtful and well constructed flap next to the zipper to protect the laptop from abrasion from the zipper. This is an uncommon and very thoughtful feature. Without it, the shiny netbook finish on the Mini 10 would surely get scratched. I have other sleeve type cases that don't have this feature. I use them on my metal cased Latitude, so it isn't an issue on that computer, but it would be on a Mini, especially if you put a decorative sticker on it.

I am not a big velcro fan, but the one use of it on this case is in a good spot. The long straight flap that you see just above the curved flap, is the one with the velcro tab. If it wears out or fails, that flap will remain pretty secure. The other two openings, both the main laptop pouch, and the small curved accessory pouch have very solid zippers on them. They even have coated pull tabs to make them more ergonomic.

Speaking of the accessory pouch, it is small, but big enough to fit the power cord and a small mouse or other accessory. Again, I can only speak for the Mini 10 power cord, but I assume that the other Netbook makers use ones that are just as compact as Dell.

I think that you will enjoy this case. It is perfect for protecting the netbook in your purse or backpack.

Laurex 15.6" Laptop Messenger Bag (Gold Wave Brown) Review

I bought this messenger bag for my 17" Dell Inspiron E1505 and love it. I've gotten tons of compliments on it and always makes a positive impression. My computer fits great inside the removable pocket, the cushion is thick, and holds everything tight. The additional zippered pocket inside has slots for pens, pencils, notepads, wallets,ipods, etc etc etc. The exterior slide pocket holds folders or soft cover 8x11 inch deals well.

The only slight gripe I have with the bag is the fact that the metal hoops where the strap attach slide around, hanging more "vertical" than "horizontal" - which irritates me. I find myself adjusting this about 50% of the time when I first pick up the bag. Though the strap itself can be adjusted to any length to accomidate people of any size and is nicely padded.

Overall, I think its a great product for the price, and know that when I someday move onto my next laptop I'll keep using the bag. It fits my lifestyle well and think that most people would be happy with it.
